The Ecosystem
The Serengeti is 30,000 square kilometres of savanna in northern Tanzania — one of the oldest and most intact ecosystems on earth. The name comes from the Maasai word "siringet," meaning "the place where the land runs on forever." Standing on the plains at dawn, you understand exactly what they meant.
The Great Migration — the annual movement of 1.5 million wildebeest, 250,000 zebra, and 500,000 gazelle across the Serengeti and Masai Mara — is the largest overland migration of mammals on earth. The river crossings at the Mara River, where crocodiles wait in the shallows, are one of the most dramatic wildlife spectacles in the world.
The best version of the Serengeti is found at dawn, when the light is golden and the plains belong to the animals. A private guide, a good vehicle, and the patience to sit with a pride of lions for an hour — that is what a Serengeti safari should be. This guide will help you find that version.
Day by Day
Day 1–2
Fly into Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfer to Arusha — the gateway to Tanzania's northern safari circuit. Spend the first night at a lodge in Arusha to acclimatise. Day two: fly by light aircraft to the Serengeti. The flight over the Rift Valley and the first sight of the plains from the air is one of the great arrivals in African travel.
Day 3–4
The central Serengeti — the Seronera Valley — is the year-round heart of the ecosystem. Morning and evening game drives with an expert guide. The Seronera River is one of the best places in Africa to see leopard, and the resident lion prides are among the most studied in the world. Sundowners on the plains as the light turns gold.
Day 5
Between June and October, the Great Migration — the annual movement of 1.5 million wildebeest and 250,000 zebra across the Serengeti — is one of the greatest wildlife spectacles on earth. The river crossings at the Mara River, where crocodiles wait in the shallows, are the defining moment. Your guide will position you for the crossing.
Day 6
Rise before dawn for a hot air balloon flight over the Serengeti — one of the great experiences in African travel. An hour drifting over the plains at sunrise, watching the wildlife below, followed by a champagne breakfast in the bush. Book through your lodge well in advance.
Day 7–8
Drive south to the Ngorongoro Crater — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most extraordinary wildlife habitats on earth. The crater floor is a self-contained ecosystem with the highest density of large mammals in Africa: lion, elephant, buffalo, black rhino, and flamingo on the soda lake. A full day on the crater floor is essential.
Accommodation
From private reserves to mobile camps that follow the migration — the Serengeti has some of the finest safari lodges in Africa.
Private Reserves & Tented Camps
Serengeti, Tanzania
Private Reserve
A 350,000-acre private reserve in the western corridor of the Serengeti — the most exclusive safari experience in Tanzania. The lodges are extraordinary, the guides are the best in Africa, and the game viewing is without equal. Book a year ahead.
Best for: The ultimate Serengeti experience
Luxury Lodge
A permanent lodge in the central Serengeti with a waterhole that attracts wildlife day and night. The infinity pool overlooks the plains, the spa is exceptional, and the food is the finest in the Serengeti.
Best for: Families & first-time safari guests
Mobile Tented Camp
A mobile camp that follows the Great Migration — moving with the wildebeest to ensure guests are always in the right place at the right time. The most authentic way to experience the migration.
Best for: Migration followers & adventure travellers
Dining
Bush dinners under the stars, sundowners on the plains, and breakfast on the crater rim — dining in the Serengeti is inseparable from the landscape.
Dining Under the African Sky
Grumeti Reserve
A private dinner set up in the bush by your guide — a table under the stars, lanterns in the acacia trees, and the sounds of the Serengeti all around. The food is extraordinary: fresh produce flown in daily, local ingredients prepared with sophistication. The most memorable dinner in Africa.
Must order: The chef's tasting menu with South African wine
Serengeti
Not a restaurant but an institution: the Serengeti sundowner. Your guide stops the vehicle on the plains at dusk, sets up a table with drinks and snacks, and you watch the sun set over Africa. Every lodge does this differently; all of them do it well.
Must order: Gin and tonic with the Serengeti sunset
Ngorongoro
The dining room at the Ngorongoro Crater Lodge — a Maasai-inspired lodge on the crater rim — serves East African cuisine with views across the crater floor. The breakfast, eaten as the morning mist lifts from the crater, is one of the great meals in Africa.
Must order: The full East African breakfast on the crater rim
Experiences
The Great Migration
Serengeti, Tanzania
The defining Serengeti experience. Wildebeest crossing the Mara River while crocodiles wait in the shallows. Position yourself with a private guide for the best chance of witnessing a crossing.
An hour over the plains at sunrise, watching the wildlife below. Followed by a champagne breakfast in the bush. One of the great experiences in African travel.
Lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino. The Serengeti has the highest density of large predators in Africa. Morning and evening drives with a private guide.
A full day on the crater floor — the most concentrated wildlife habitat on earth. Black rhino, flamingo, and the highest density of lions in Africa.
Experience the bush on foot with an armed ranger. The perspective is entirely different from a vehicle — you notice the small things: tracks, insects, plants, birds.
A visit to a traditional Maasai village — the indigenous people of the Serengeti. Learn about their culture, their relationship with the land, and their extraordinary knowledge of the ecosystem.
Local Knowledge
The Great Migration river crossings are unpredictable — wildebeest can wait for days before crossing. Allow at least three nights in the northern Serengeti during July–September for the best chance of witnessing one.
Book your hot air balloon flight through your lodge before you arrive. Flights fill months ahead during peak season.
The dry season (June–October) is the best time for game viewing — the vegetation is sparse and animals congregate around water sources. The wet season (November–May) has fewer tourists and extraordinary birdlife.
Hire a private vehicle and guide rather than joining a shared game drive. The difference in experience is significant — a private guide can spend as long as you want with any animal.
Pack neutral colours — khaki, olive, beige. Bright colours disturb wildlife and are impractical in the bush.
