"The most storied hotel in the French Quarter — and the only address in New Orleans that feels truly irreplaceable."

There are newer hotels in New Orleans. There are taller hotels, more modern hotels, hotels with more amenities and higher thread counts. But there is only one Hotel Monteleone — a family-owned landmark on Royal Street that has been welcoming guests since 1886, that has hosted every great American writer of the 20th century, and that contains, in its lobby, one of the most extraordinary bars on earth. To stay here is to stay inside a piece of American cultural history.

The Beaux-Arts facade — ornate white stonework, wrought-iron balconies, the canopied entrance on Royal Street — announces the hotel with a grandeur that has not diminished in 140 years. The lobby carries the same weight: marble floors, gilded ceilings, the kind of proportions that remind you that New Orleans was once one of the wealthiest cities in the world. The rooms have been thoughtfully updated without sacrificing the character that makes the hotel what it is. The French Quarter views from the upper floors, looking out over the rooftops toward the river, are among the finest in the city.

"A Vieux Carré at the Carousel Bar — invented here in 1938 by Walter Bergeron, slowly revolving since 1949. Tennessee Williams drank here, and you can feel it."

The service is the warmest in New Orleans — genuinely Southern in the best possible sense, attentive without formality, knowledgeable about the city in a way that only a hotel with deep roots can be. The concierge team can get you into the best restaurants, the best jazz clubs, and the best second-line parades; they know the city the way a local knows it, not the way a guidebook does. This is the hotel that New Orleans deserves — and the one that New Orleans has always had.

What Not to Miss

The Carousel Bar & Lounge

The most famous bar in New Orleans — and one of the great bars in America. The Carousel Bar has been slowly revolving since 1949, completing one full rotation every fifteen minutes as guests sip the cocktail that was born in this very room. In 1938, Hotel Monteleone head bartender Walter Bergeron created the Vieux Carré — a potent, sophisticated blend of rye whiskey, cognac, sweet vermouth, Bénédictine, and both Peychaud's and Angostura bitters — making it one of the few classic cocktails with a precisely documented birthplace. Tennessee Williams, Truman Capote, Ernest Hemingway, and William Faulkner all drank here. Order the Vieux Carré. There is no more historically correct cocktail order in the world.

The Royal Street Location

Hotel Monteleone occupies the finest address in the French Quarter — the corner of Royal Street and Iberville, at the heart of the antiques district and steps from the best restaurants, galleries, and jazz clubs in New Orleans. The Beaux-Arts facade, with its ornate white stonework and wrought-iron balconies, is one of the most photographed buildings in the city. To walk out the front door onto Royal Street at dusk, with the sound of jazz drifting from the clubs on Bourbon, is to understand why New Orleans is unlike anywhere else on earth.

Criollo Restaurant

The hotel's signature restaurant celebrates the extraordinary culinary heritage of Louisiana — Creole classics executed with precision and a deep respect for tradition. The shrimp remoulade, the turtle soup, and the bread pudding soufflé are the dishes that have made Criollo a destination in its own right. The Sunday jazz brunch, with its live music and bottomless Bloody Marys, is among the finest hotel dining experiences in the South.

The Spa Aria

A full-service spa on the 14th floor with treatments inspired by Louisiana's botanical heritage — local herbs, Gulf Coast minerals, and the aromatic traditions of the city's apothecary culture. The rooftop pool, adjacent to the spa, offers a rare elevated view over the French Quarter rooftops toward the Mississippi River.

The Literary Legacy

Hotel Monteleone holds the rare distinction of being an officially designated international Literary Landmark — one of the very few hotels in the world to receive the honour. It earned it. Ernest Hemingway, William Faulkner, Eudora Welty, Truman Capote, and Tennessee Williams all called the hotel a creative haven and, in several cases, a second home. Williams set scenes of "The Rose Tattoo" here; Capote claimed — with characteristic embellishment — to have been born in the hotel; Faulkner wrote here during his New Orleans years. The hotel's connection to American literature is not a marketing conceit. It is a matter of record, and the staff know every story. Ask them.

The Verdict

The soul of New Orleans in a single address — irreplaceable, irreducible, and unlike anywhere else on earth.

The Four Seasons may have the better river views and the more polished service. But Hotel Monteleone has something no amount of money can manufacture: 140 years of stories, a bar that revolves, and a Royal Street address that puts you at the very heart of the city that invented American culture. Stay here first.
